We must judge the cards we receive on the intent of the person who sent them. What a person writes in the card tells a lot about how much they put in. If they wrote an enormous paragraph, they obviously put a lot of thought into it, but if they put their signature, or even left it blank, it’s possible they picked it up on the way to your event. That’s difficult to determine though, and it goes back to knowing the usual motives of the people you associate with.

Greeting cards shouldn’t come with expectations or rules. You shouldn’t have to put money in their card or write down every though you’ve ever had about the person. They should be grateful you took the time out of your day to pick something out for them, even if it is a greeting card they have seen a million times before in various forms. The objection here is understandable though because it’s difficult to determine whether buying something from the store is a well thought out gesture or a lazy way out. That doesn’t take away from the fact we should be grateful to those who were kind enough to think about us.
